Spontaneous Pike's Peak Trip

Just to catalog the day - I'm in my last week of unemployment, so I'm trying to live it up as much as I can. I ended up deciding to drive up to the summit of Pike's Peak after figuring out that they let you do that sort of thing. A 19-mile stretch of steep and winding road gets you to the top and once you're there, at 14,100 feet, any energy you expend makes it tough to breathe.

The view is something out of a movie and despite all the tourists around, there are lots of spots to be able to quietly take it in. For me, new to the experience, it's really an emotional one. I like to seek out things that make me feel small in the world and exploring things like this is certainly atop the list to do that - very humbling and not to be taken for granted.

I ended the day in Manitou Springs (pop < 5000 people) eating Turkish food and stumbling upon a Bluegrass band playing a show outside for a very sizable crowd. Came for the banjo, stayed for the warm sound that is an upright bass.
